WASHINGTON POST CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE

(Originally published in the Washington Post)

WHY SHOULD VOTERS ELECT YOU?

I hate gridlock & support a limited-access parkway linking I-270 to I-95. I use common sense, am frugal with taxpayers' dollars, listen carefully, ask crucial questions, cut red tape, solve constituents' problems, have 25 years of experience & "institutional memory," have courage to speak up--in positive manner, and work cooperatively with colleagues. Some say I "speak softly, but carry a big stick."

I try to anticipate & prevent situations before they become problems: preventing discrimination caused by the mis-use of genetic information.

Successful strategies have brought funding for education and major projects in Garrett Park, Gaithersburg, Rockville.

WHAT DO YOU WANT THE VOTERS TO KNOW ABOUT YOU ?

"Top 100 Maryland Women"; former teacher; Genetic privacy, kids' booster seats, MVA Saturday hours, smoke-free Orioles stadium, diesel emissions testing, safer highways, cleaner air, ICCYES.ORG.

I am a transportation advocate who hates gridlock and wants to improve air quality. I use common sense and am frugal with taxpayers' dollars. I listen carefully, ask crucial questions, cut red tape and help solve problems either legislatively or behind the scenes. I work thru conciliation and try to anticipate and prevent situations from becoming major problems, e.g. the misuse of genetic information. My successful strategies have brought us funding for education and major projects. I have been involved in District 17 for over 30 yrs and am responsive to the day-to-day needs and concerns of my fellow residents.

In twenty-five years of legislative service, I've made a big difference in education, economic development, criminal justice, arts, transportation, health services, the environment, libraries, funding for Montgomery projects.

I've broken ground with new legislation about diesel emissions testing, health services, workplace smoking, road rage, day care for children & elderly, keeping guns from children, genetic technologies/discrimination, speed limits, MVA Saturday hours, traffic safety, small claims court, identity theft, and especially the ICC.

I listen to constituents, cut red tape, legislate against discrimination based on genetic testing, and am frugal with taxpayer dollars.

Twenty-five years as a District 17 legislator have meant more to me than just a sense of accomplishment. They have allowed me to serve better, smarter, and wiser.

I've focused on education, economic development, criminal justice, and more. I had a 100% environmental record many of these years. I've broken ground on diesel emissions testing, preventive health services, workplace smoking, road rage, and day care for children & elderly.

I've struggled against discrimination based on genetic testing and sponsored legislation that keeps guns from children. Not least, I've been as creative and frugal with taxpayer dollars as with my own.
