Dear Scholarship Applicant,

I am pleased that you plan to attend a college in Maryland. The application is available on this website in Adobe Acrobat.

As in previous years, the District 17 Senate application process uses  a community-based committee to select the students who will be awarded scholarships.

Criteria for scholarship awards include: community service, family responsibilities, academic performance and financial need.  I hope these scholarships will go to students of all ages, especially those who have demonstrated an interest in public service and who are making a contribution to our community.

To apply for a District 17 Senate Scholarship, you must:

Be a resident of Legislative District 17.  Confirm your address is in the district at http://mdelect.net.

Send a copy of your completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.  Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov or contact your guidance counselor or financial aid office to get the form

Attend an approved institution of higher learning located in Maryland or have permission from the State Scholarship Administration to attend an out-of-state institution offering a unique major. Visit www.mhec.state.md.us for more information.

Be enrolled for at least six credit hours per semester

Mail your application to:

Senator Jennie Forehand

If you have additional questions, please call our office at (301) 858-3134 or (800) 492-7122, ext. 3134.

You will be notified of the awards as soon as the committee finishes its work--hopefully by mid-August. Although this timing may be inconvenient for your planning purposes, we are not sure until the end of June how much money is available for distribution.

Maryland has some great schools and I hope you will be able to take advantage of one of them. Good luck with plans for your future!

Best wishes,
